Massimo TAVONI

During the Seventeenth IAMC Annual Meeting held online on 4-6 November 2024, the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium was proud to honour Massimo TAVONI (EIEE and PoliMI) with the Extraordinary Contributions to the field of Integrated Assessment Modeling Award.

During the Seventeenth IAMC Annual Meeting held online on 4-6 November 2024, the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium was proud to honour Massimo TAVONI (EIEE and PoliMI) with the Extraordinary Contributions to the field of Integrated Assessment Modeling Award.

This year’s Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the field of IAM went to Massimo Tavoni, in recognition of his cumulative contribution to the IAM community.

Massimo has made pioneering scientific contributions on

  • the economics of climate change mitigation pathways connecting endogenous learning and innovation, finance, consumer behaviour, climate change damages and distributional impacts with integrated assessment modeling
  • on the assessment of feasibility and robustness of scenarios in integrated assessment modeling connecting them to uncertainty, decision and policy analysis
  • progressed in numerous projects, including an ERC starting grant (COBHAM) and ERC consolidator grant (EUNICE).

Massimo left a large mark on science-based policy advice

  • in particular as IPCC lead author in AR5 (work on mitigation costs and distributional impacts) and AR6 (work on feasibility assessment of mitigation pathways)

and provided outstanding service to the community, e.g. by

  • mentoring early career researchers
  • co-directing the international energy workshops
  • establishing the EIEE at CMCC
  • hosting the IAMC secretariat for the past six years at CMCC
