Call for papers: ECEMP 2025

European Energy Transition and Society: moving towards Implementation
16-17 October 2025, Brussels and online

ECEMP 2025 is dedicated to showcasing the latest policy-relevant findings derived from analyses of climate and energy models. The event also serves as a meeting point to discuss the latest research trends in developing collaborative modelling exercises. The scope and thematic areas of the event include, but are not limited to:

• Realizing the 2040 targets: What policy measures and innovations should be accelerated? Latest trends, assessments and definitions of Energy Transition scenarios, how do we reach European climate targets?
• Comparing modelling frameworks for better implementation: How to compare results between models? How to explore different model frameworks and results visually?
• Developing detailed energy and climate models in space and time: how to include more sectoral detail, e.g., sectoral targets like grid expansion or Hydrogen or mobility?
• Assessing model implementation of different targets: How to advance developing common metrics across models, input data harmonization and common standards?
• Broadening approaches to include social sciences and humanities in modelling: e.g., participatory approaches to modelling social behaviours in energy / multi-system models.
• Expand the scope of energy models to include social sciences and humanities topics in models: e.g., circular economy, socio-economic and behavioural aspects to increasing climate resilience.
• The application of a (multi-) system approach to energy modelling, recognising the interactions between the energy system, other key EU policy pillars like climate and mobility and beyond.
• Understanding and showcasing distributional and other socio-economic implications
• AI for energy knowledge discovery accelerating human capacities.
• Modelling specific policy implementations under the EGD, Fit-for-55, and Climate Neutrality target.
• Cross-border energy coordination and market design evolution.
• Understanding the interactions within the climate-economy-biodiversity nexus, and how to bring these considerations into the ex-ante impact assessment modelling tools.
• Expand the assessment indicators, including wider policy priorities such as competitiveness, health, justice.

ECEMP 2025 is organized by various EU-funded projects under the Horizon Europe programme, DGs at the European Commission and other initiatives. The active participation of these projects makes ECEMP 2025 possible.

ECEMP 2025 will be a hybrid event, featuring segments dedicated to policy-relevant research results (mainly in person, during the first day) as well as in-depth discussions on the latest trends in modelling development (second day, partly also hybrid format). Attendance to the in-person part of the event is only on a (predetermined) invitational basis due to the venue’s limited capacity. Attendance to the online part of the event is registration-based, and everyone is welcome. All plenary sessions are with in-person speakers, and these sessions are streamed online.
