IAMC Contributions at the Bonn Climate Meeting (SB62), June 2025

IAMC members played an active role in the Bonn Climate Meeting (SB62), held from 16–26 June 2025, contributing to research dialogues, technical discussions, and stakeholder workshops focused on climate ambition, equity, and transformation pathways aligned with the Paris Agreement.

17 June – SBSTA Research Dialogue

The 17th Meeting of the SBSTA Research Dialogue brought together scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders to exchange research findings, lessons learned, and identify needs for research and capacity building to support implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.

Setu Pelz (IIASA) presented a poster on JustMIP, a model intercomparison initiative that integrates underrepresented justice considerations into global IAM frameworks. Developed by IIASA and ELEVATE project partners, the effort drew on feedback from diverse stakeholder engagement.

Jessica Strefler (PIK) presented on Integrated Assessment of Sustainable Development and Climate Protection in a breakout session on the climate action – sustainable development nexus. She emphasised that without stronger climate policies, climate damages could significantly hinder sustainable development. A combination of ambitious climate change mitigation policies with targeted sustainable development policies can substantially improve sustainable development outcomes.

18 June – Metrics for NDCs and Just Transition

Setu Pelz (IIASA) joined a technical discussion on metrics for assessing ambition and alignment of NDCs, co-hosted by the WRI, IDDRI, New Climate Institute, and Climate Analytics.

At a side event hosted by IAEA and UNECA on just transition and financing pathways from coal to sustainable energy, he presented IIASA’s work on fossil fuel phase-out and scenarios developed under the ENGAGE project.

19 June – UNEP informal dialogue on science and narratives around 1.5°C

This event convened experts from academia, international organizations, and governments to assess the implications of upcoming NDCs for the feasibility of achieving the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal.

Speakers included Carl Schleussner (IIASA), Joeri Rogelj (Imperial College London), Nathan Hultman (University of Maryland), and Elmar Kriegler (PIK).

They discussed global climate predictions and the latest science on the feasibility of limiting global warming to 1.5°C – and to below 2°C. The dialogue also covered key assumptions and implications related to carbon dioxide removal (CDR), as well as equity, adaptation, and resilience considerations.

20 June – ELEVATE and NEWPATHWAYS Global Stakeholder Workshops

Climate Strategies organized two workshops in parallel to the SB62:

• The 5th ELEVATE International Stakeholder Workshop, drawing on the latest ELEVATE and COMMITTED project findings to evaluate the interplay of ambition and justice-focused approaches in shaping robust 2035 NDCs. The event further explored how to capture and reflect different fairness considerations in mitigation pathways, turning these insights into practical policy solutions to advance the Net-Zero transition.
• The inaugural workshop of the NEWPATHWAYS project, which brought together a selected group of stakeholders to explore how global climate transition pathways – grounded in robust modelling and scientific analysis – can more effectively support equitable, national and regional implementation of the Paris Agreement.

26 June – UNFCCC side event: “Advancing Justice Considerations in Climate Policy – Bridging National and Global Perspectives”

IIASA and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro co-organize an official UNFCCC side event. Titled “Advancing Justice Considerations in Climate Policy – Bridging National and Global Perspectives”, the session will address how global and national models can better integrate justice with climate mitigation. The event will bring together prominent voices from the Global South and international research institutions to align development and poverty alleviation with mitigation goals. IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program Director Keywan Riahi will contribute to the discussion alongside experts from the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), Ghana; National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), India; Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ), Brazil; and King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center, (KAPSARC), Saudi Arabia.
