IAMC members joined the Fourteenth meeting of the SBSTA Research dialogue on 9 June 2022 via poster presentations to provide insights into ongoing research on Carbon Dioxide Removal and climate projections in selected Asian countries.
In their presentations, they acknowledged that Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) reduces net greenhouse gas emissions and plays an important role for reaching the Paris Climate Goals. However, they also showed that deeper emissions reductions can reduce reliance on CDR, and that sectoral and regional potentials differ, and the resulting distributional and justice issues need to be taken into account. Furthermore, IAMC members presented the results of their study of climate targets and greenhouse gas emission reductions of six Asian countries. They concluded that short-term targets do not match long-term ambitions nor meet global climate goals. They also showed that economic burdens vary widely and that the most cost-effective approach to mitigation will vary across countries.

On 8 June 2022 Keywan Riahi (IIASA) took part in the SBSTA – IPCC Special event: Unpacking the new scientific knowledge and key findings in the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment report: Mitigation of Climate Change presenting insights of the IPCC AR6 report and participated in the Structured Expert Dialogue providing scientific feedback into the policy processes.
On 7-8 June at the Third meeting of the structured expert dialogue of the second periodic review several experts among which Jim Skea and Alaa Al Khourdajie (Imperial College London), Keywan Riahi and Shonali Pachauri (IIASA), Michael Grubb (UCL) shared views on findings of IPCC AR6 WG III report and responded to the issues / questions raised in submissions by Parties and observers.
At the NDC ASPECTS side event “Benchmarks and Governance for Achieving Net-Zero Globally, Sectorally and Nationally” on June 13, Dirk-Jan van de Ven (BC3) and Saritha Sudharmma Vishwanathan (IIMA) will present new research on global and sectoral mitigation benchmarks, and on energy and socio-economic impacts of transforming India’s energy sector respectively.
