Starting February 2025, four new members join the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium:

The Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is dedicated to research that supports sustainable futures. Since its establishment in 1997, ISF has grown to include over 100 staff, 60 higher degree research students, and 40+ associates, working across disciplines to address complex sustainability challenges. One of ISF’s key research initiatives is the One Earth Climate Model (OECM), developed by A/Prof Dr. Sven Teske in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The OECM provides regionally detailed climate mitigation pathways, helping businesses and financial institutions align their strategies with a low-carbon future. By February 2025, the model will include data for over 50 countries, covering non-energy greenhouse gas emissions and enabling organizations to assess their Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This regional approach supports more tailored and practical implementation of climate strategies.

Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a globally – renowned research university, famous for its remarkable accomplishments in engineering, cutting – edge scientific research, and interdisciplinary innovation. Its Shenzhen campus (HITSZ), located in the vibrant city frequently hailed as “China’s Silicon Valley” and “City of Design”, benefits from the city’s dynamic innovation ecosystem and global influence. Against this backdrop, the School of Economics and Management has been devoting itself to climate change research. The school is home to two significant scientific research platforms: the Shenzhen Research Center for Climate Change and the Shenzhen Low – Carbon Engineering Big Data Laboratory. These platforms play a crucial role as decision – making think tanks in formulating Shenzhen’s climate change response strategies. By using systematic modeling and analysis, the school provides valuable insights and suggestions to promote sustainable development at both national and local levels.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) provides observations, services and research on the atmosphere, the near space and the seas. Climate research at FMI spans the physical, social, and economic causes and effects of climate change, with an emphasis on supporting climate neutrality and improving societal functionality under changing climate and weather conditions. We use Integrated Assessment Models to analyze how different actions by the human society drive climate and environmental change, while Earth System Models help us to gain information on the climate system responses and estimate how the climate will change in the future. By integrating innovation-oriented research with future foresight, the FMI aims to provide valuable insights for mitigation and adaptation policies on local, regional and global scales.
Established in 1853 as the first Portuguese Meteorological and Geophysical Observatory, Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) has developed into an integrated Earth System Institute, with research in solid Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric processes, their interactions, and their relevance for a sustainable society. IDL is an Associated Laboratory based at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) conducting quantitative-integrated research on Earth System dynamics aiming to provide impactful answers to present-day societal challenges. IDL research priorities comprise a transversal articulation of three main research lines:
i) Climate Change, monitoring/modelling its evolution to contribute to its international predictive effort, and to fully explore mitigation & adaptation solutions;
ii) Natural Hazards, integrating different spatio-temporal scales of analysis of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans, lithosphere and mantle dynamics processes, to better prepare human societies for adaptation and mitigation efforts; iii) Geo-Resources and Energy Transition, exploring new ways of integrating new technologies and geoscience concepts, to comply with the urgent need of a generalized sustainable use of energy resources, water and raw materials.
