ENGAGE project Summary for Policymakers published

The ENGAGE project on Feasibility of Climate Scenarios has published its Summary for Policymakers, collecting the main policy-relevant insights from the research. The three key insights of this global research consortium of 30 partners are:

1. Limiting overshoot creates multiple long-term benefits.
   Even though higher investments would be required on the short term, scenarios without temperature overshoot show higher GDP growth on the longer term and limit the impact from climate change.
2. Support for improving institutional capacity for implementation is key.
   The ENGAGE project developed a new framework to assess feasibility concerns of climate scenarios and used that as basis for a new generation of scenarios that minimize feasibility concerns. Institutional capacity to implement emission reductions emerges as key concern in meeting the targets of the Paris Agreement.
3. To close the gap to 1.5C: expand net zero targets and bring them forward in time.
   An elaborate multi-model study of global and national IAMs found that implementing net-zero targets in countries that have not yet announced these and bringing all existing net-zero targets forward in time could close the gap to limit warming to 1.5C.
