Taoyuan Wei (CICERO) and Valeria Costantini (Roma Tre University) are organizing a topic collection “Climate Change Assessment Based on Economic Models” in the journal “Frontiers in Climate”.

About this Research Topic

Climate change is a global challenge closely related to economic activities. Mitigation measures can constrain economic development but also push the economy, moving toward a sustainable pathway. Meanwhile, the unavoidable global warming may influence the economy by various channels, e.g., damages on infrastructure, labour health, and productivity of natural resources. As an important tool to examine the interactions between an economy and climate change, economic models have been widely used to address climate change issues including mitigation, impact, and adaption at the global, regional, national and local levels. The approaches used by such models include, among others, econometric, computable general equilibrium (CGE), dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE), system dynamics, input-output, and integrated approaches to coupling economic models with models from other disciplines by soft or hard linking. Hence, the research topic intends to collect the latest developments in the application of economic models in the climate research field addressing the multiple dimensions of sustainable development.

This research topic aims to collect the latest studies focusing on any climate issues based on solid economic models. We are particularly interested in applied studies that provide insightful information to help stakeholders make climate actions related to mitigation, adaptation, and other behaviour changes to promote sustainable economic development. Authors can adopt any type of economic models to analyse any climate issues at any geographic level. Integrated assessment studies are also welcome if an economic module plays a central role in the modelling approach. Examples include policy analysis, socio-economic effects of extreme events caused by climate change, forecasts, scenario analysis based on e.g. SSPs/RCPs, and net-zero pathways.

The studies contributing to the Research Topic must adopt an economic modelling approach. Specific themes for the Research Topic include but are not limited to:

  • Impact analysis of policies for climate mitigation and adaptation
  • Climate risk analysis at global, regional, national, and local level
  • Socio-economic impacts of climate change and associated increasing extreme events
  • Scenario analysis of net-zero pathways and sustainable economic development
  • Improved modelling approach to better understand climate issues
  • Multi-modelling comparison studies on interactions between economy and climate
  • Integrated assessment of climate issues

Keywords: Economic models, Socio-economic impacts of climate change, Climate Risk Analysis, Multi-modelling studies on climate and economy, Integrated assessments, Impact analysis, Scenario Analysis of net-zero pathways

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
