Peking University Launches China’s First Integrated Assessment Model Training Workshop

In the backdrop of China’s heightened focus on carbon neutrality, Peking University marked a significant milestone in this Fall. The Institute of Carbon Neutrality, one of the most recent IAMC members, initiated its first-ever workshop on integrated assessment models, designed to foster interdisciplinary knowledge and innovative solutions in the realm of carbon policies. Nearly 50 graduate students from over 30 leading universities were invited to attend the five-day in-person workshop, held last August.

The workshop’s inauguration was graced by the remarks of esteemed experts such as Professor Dai Hancheng, Deputy Dean Zhang Haibin, Dean Liu Yong, and Director Liu Xin from EF China. Their insights provided a foundational perspective on China’s ambitious carbon goals and the pivotal role of integrated assessment models. Additionally, experienced IAM modelers including Dr. Li Shantong, Dr. Teng Fei, Dr. Jiang Kejun, and Dr. Ou Yang presented their modeling research, shedding light on the latest advancements and methodologies in the field.

Over the course of five days, participants immersed themselves in specialized training sessions provided by Peking University’s Laboratory of Energy and Environmental Economics and Policy (LEEEP). Using the Integrated Model of Energy, Environment, and Economy for Sustainable Development (IMED) platform, the scholars engaged in hands-on analysis, exploring various facets of industries, regions, and pertinent policies.

Looking ahead, Peking University envisions this workshop as an annual summer event. The goal is not only to refine and expand the curriculum but also to welcome an increasing number of students and researchers eager to delve deep into integrated assessment models and their applications.
