Is it possible to write an IPCC-style assessment for a small country?
We just did!
200 researchers from over 50 institutions spent more than three years working on an “Austrian IPCC report“, an assessment of the literature on climate change impacts as well as adaptation mitigation options at a national level. This interdisciplinary project was coordinated by IIASA’s Program Director Keywan Riahi and Senior Research ScholarDaniel Huppmann together with Harald Rieder (BOKU University) and Margreth Keiler (University of Innsbruck and Austrian Academy of Sciences, ÖAW). The structure and processes of the report closely followed the IPCC as the “gold standard” of climate science assessment.
The Second Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change was presented by the Austrian Environment and Climate Minister Norbert Totschnig and welcomed in a video message by the Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen.
The report shows that the temperature in Austria has risen by around 3.1°C since 1900 – more than twice the global average. The frequency of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall and mudslides is increasing, with significant consequences for health, infrastructure, agriculture and tourism.
The report also evaluates different options for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaption to climate change impacts, highlighting synergies and trade-offs with other societal goals including the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).
