What the database contains

EDGAR provides estimates of anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants for all countries of the world, resolved by emitting sector and by year, together with spatially gridded distributions.

For the integrated assessment community it serves two purposes: as a historical baseline against which model results are calibrated and validated, and as a consistent source of sectoral detail when harmonising scenario emissions to observed history.

How to use it with IAM output

Scenario emissions are usually harmonised to a historical inventory before being passed to climate emulators. Where a study harmonises to EDGAR, the version and release year should be reported, since estimates are revised between releases.
